Once upon a time, I was frustrated with my icon-making. All I'm doing is copying everyone else's style. I couldn't come up with my own. So this made me give up on it completely. I seriously thought I was going to stop making icons for good. But then I started missing it. And then alias_challenge issued their Season Five challenges, a season I've never iconned

I was going to direct you to the tutorial in my Memories, but unfortunately the entry has been deleted. :( All I did was add a few layers filled with solid colors (like red and blue) on top of the picture and set them on various styles (Soft Light, etc). It helps in making the colors stand out more and contrasted. Play around yourself and see what you get, I don't remember exactly how I did it anymore.
