Man, I'm totally going to ask him for a picture if I ever see him. Seems like a great way to get him into a conversation, since walking up and starting talking to him might be met with "dude, I'm trying to eat here".

I totally agree with your analysis -- I have always been 'eh' about taking pictures with people/things myself. The experience I'm having feels way more important than proving I had it. Which is different from making art, I think... taking photos that express something. But just taking a picture that shows I was there doesn't express something, it distracts me from the expression of the experience itself.
