Through factors outside my control, I just lost my biggest client. Add this to our second biggest client basically not testing at the moment because of the economy, and, even if they were, having successfully screwed us over with a global contract which halves the price we were charging them before, and the fact that generally business is down ( Read more... )

:( I'm sorry to hear that. What will you do, if it comes to that?

It sort of depends on the timing, what with the pregnancy and all. I can't really look for a new permanent job at this point, so I'd try to pick up private consulting or more likely language teaching work until I can get Phist (the current nickname) into childcare, and then job search in earnest.

Phist? Hehe! Cute. And yeah, it's tricky to balance a new job around the pregnancy. I hope your office stays open until you can go on mat leave - but then would they not pay? Or does it work differently in Germany anyway?

Yeah, maternity leave is paid, but it's still a long way away, and who knows if we'll last that long. There are other (quite substantial) government subsidies for extended maternity leave that we are relying on which become complicated if I don't actually have a job...

Oh, shit:(

You'll find a way to make it work, somehow. If you're going to have to be unemployed, now's the right time for you, right?

Can you talk to your employer if the worst happens ad see if they can keep you on the payroll until your benefit kicks in?

Our clients are dicking us hard in this economy, too. I'm basically doing a job for free (for my company) because the client doesn't want to fork out extra for project management even though they know it needs it, but “we'd like to keep this relationship a positive one” is the sort of back-handed crap we get in return. And the competition for what we do is so insane right now, we basically have to cave or start worrying if they're going to shop around.

BLEH.
