Brushing ruins my lovely waves, too. Even my horn comb has that effect (though to a lesser extent than does my boar bristle brush). It is quite depressing, and does not encourage me to comb as much as I should!
It is absolutely fine to wash when you can't stand the grease anymore. That's about five days for me, too. Maybe the quality of your water contributes to your frizz problem, or it might be your environment. Try coconut oil--a very, very tiny bit rubbed on your fingertips--as a conditioner once your hair is dry. That should help with shine, too. I also recommend cooking with coconut oil (the purest you can find, obviously) to get good fats in your diet. Might also try vitamin E supplements.
Have a look at the curly tag here--BS/ACV might not be a workable solution for your in the long term, or at least not as the sole method of washing. I would recommend trying water-only washes, actually.
As far as shine goes--it might take a little time to get there. For me, shine didn't improve until about 4 or 5 weeks in--I think it had to do with getting all the gunk out of my hair; I was quite the product junkie before switching. If your hair is naturally porous, it can take a long time. Hairtypes differ in porosity--the straighter your hair, the shinier.
thanks for the advice everyone! the lemon juice seems less harsh that BS as well - the BS just seemed to take ALL the oil out of my hair. I've done one water rinse before and that seemed to work pretty well also, but I'll give the lemon juice one a try as well. Hopefully this works!
