WordPress: The cheerful opportunist, and others waiting in the wings

Feb 18, 2009 18:24

When LJ went though its grim staff purge at the start of January, WordPress made a post with instructions on how to import from LJ (LiveJournal Migration Made Easy). After January ended, they observed that 7,111 blogs had been imported, despite the clunkiness of the process (January Wrap Up). Apparently the demand inspired them to make a much ( Read more... )

I have been so excited about DW. I can't wait to be able to beta test it.

Also, inksome is becoming very popular as an alternative.

I AM BETA TESTING IT, WOO. And running the wiki! And I just registered memewidth.org!

Inksome is still getting off the ground--they currently have 3459 active users with posters at 1268 for the past month and 540 for the past week. IJ is still the LJ Clone juggernaut. And I also I think I've heard that at some point, Inksome will be switching to the DW codebase. I think switching is going to do any clone a world of good, in terms of bugfixes, documentation, and upgrades, not to mention a stronger open source community. Squeaky might want to consider it, if he can. It'd be nice if the JournalFen people could, too--DW already has a working built in invite and pay system included.

What's memewidth.org going to be used for?

I'm still a huge fan of IJ -- it's growing more and more, and Squeaky is working hard on the bugs that've come with growth. Dreamwidth sounds promising too -- I want to look into it as a backup for IJ.

I really admire what Squeaky has done with IJ, but I worry. He works hard on the bugs, but some of them aren't easy to fix, and he doesn't have a lot of resources to do so. The comment rot problem has been around for a long time, and it's a serious bug that causes dataloss. LJ fixed it years ago, which means he's even running on old code. I think he should seriously consider moving IJ over to the DW codebase as soon as it stabalizes. It might be difficult to migrate, but in the long run, it would do a lot of good. There would be a ton of bug fixes and new features, ones that he wouldn't have to figure out all by himself. (On the other hand, it would upset people who preferred the older LJ featureset.)

I also worry because he has more permanent accounts than paid accounts (see stats.bml), and he frequently keeps selling them for only the cost of 2 years of paid time.

Hmm, looks like I don't need to write that "how to" on backing up your LJ anymore.

I'll use the new WP tool later. Really looking forward to DW, and if Inksome/IJ switch then the distributed model will really have legs, which'll be even nicer.

synecdochic wants another site running DW code as quickly as possible, because they'll find different things that need fixing because of their different use cases. I know Inksome has at least expressed interest, and I think they're small and new enough that it will be less pain than IJ.
