Snap.com popup ads start with nonprofits

Nov 11, 2007 00:07

The first ads have been spotted in Snap.com popups. They are only for nonprofit causes, however. Ads have been seen so far for Autism Speaks, WWF, Save The Children, and UNICEF. They do not appear on every popup Snap.com makes, but will occasionally appear in lieu of the usual search box.

I was going to say something about that to LJ but since they were nonprofit causes I didn't. It still is an unwanted intrusion that some paid members paid to avoid.

Well, I kind of doubt they'll stay as charity ads. I guess it's always possible, but it doesn't seem likely.

I'm sure that they'll say that since it is possible to disable this feature (no matter how lame or disfunctional the disable feature is), that it really don't count as an ad. They will insist it is a feature, a desirable feature, and will say that they do not wish to deny this VALUABLE service to their most important customers.

It's funny that you should use an Amazon link in your picture as the example. Next time, check out the link destination if you hover over the link to the book in the preview - you'll find that if the original link didn't already have an Amazon affiliate ID in it, the new one will. This isn't the case if you just click on the link itself, but if you go to the preview bit and click there, you'll be using Snap's (well, I assume it's Snap's - it could also be LJ's, I guess) Amazon affiliate ID, which means if you go on to buy that book they'll be getting revenue from it.

They don't do that if it's already got someone else's ID in it, which is good, but still. No love.

Also, uh.

Apparently I'm blind? Because you used a Wikipedia link, not an Amazon link. It confused me because it was about a book. :P

(But the base thing about Amazon links still applies)

But not everyone accesses LJ from a computer where they can do that - some people from work, or school, or Internet cafes, where changing options like that may not be possible, or, even if they are, they may be on a different computer each time, or so on. Just like any other LJ feature, it should be something you disable/enable on your LJ account, rather than on your computer's settings.

I think this is what I agree with--if this is what they're going to do, paid users should have a user settings based site wide toggle for it.
