I went to the Update Journal page earlier without realising I was logged out, and saw that it was covered in ads. Not just one ad, several of them.

They already have something like an ad in the notification emails -- since being purchased by Six Apart, there is a footer that has lots of links on where to buy things from LJ. But what's the point in putting ads in the notification emails if they aren't even sending the emails out?

The ones on the update page have been there for a while--two on the right side.

I don't see one in the comment notifications I have, and I am Basic--or are you talking about the gift ones?

If I remember correctly, a lot of the current comment troubles have to do with Hotmail and others blocking LJ as spam, but I guess overall the notifications have been a bit sluggish.

Didn't know that about the update page -- I'd only ever seen it logged in.

Now that I'm looking at the footer, I see that it's different now than it was before. The old one used to read

This automatic notification email was sent by LiveJournal.com according to your email preferences.

FAQs | LiveJournal.com News | Explore LiveJournal.com | Gift Shop | Site Policies

And the one I'm receiving now says

(If you'd prefer to not get these updates, go to the Comment Settings page and turn off the relevant options.)
But it may be a difference between Reply To Entry or Reply To Comment. Since I haven't been receiving any Reply To Entry emails lately, I don't know. I use Gmail, and it's got a pretty spam folder (and I get a LOT of spam), but the Reply To Entry emails are not going in my inbox or spam folder. They aren't there at all. Since there are so many different people with different email providers, I find it hard to believe that Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, Your Mom's Email, ( ... )

Oh, and don't mention any of those things in lj_releases -- that'll get you banhammered in twenty seconds flat.

I have to ask something that I'm hoping someone in this community will know: are paid account users supposed to see snap.com shots on other people's journals even if their viewing options have them disabled? I am under the impression based on the wording of the checkbox on the viewing options page, as well as the fact that I opted out and I'm still seeing them on other people's journals, but I am still a paid user (until November 17, that is, after that 6A will never see another dime from me).

Yes, they'll show up unless you disable them site wide. If you click on the gear thing in the snapshot, there are options to disable them. Snap.com does this by setting a cookie on your computer, so if you regularly clean cookies, look into AdBlock Plus or NoScript instead.

Ah, awesome, thank you so much for the quick response. :) I actually had just read it while I was poking around on lj_releases and came back to amend myself. Haha. I guess I should read a little more before asking things, but I was really irked by it and ready to freak out on livejournal (again).

No, it's okay, asking is just fine, and better than freaking!

I feel stupid--how do I opt out of Snap?

Which opt out are you looking for?

An opt out for Snap.com on your journal, or the opt out across the entire site?

The entire site...please.

Mouse over one of the links that has Snap.com on it. In the upper right hand corner of the box, there will be a gear like symbol. Click on it, and you'll be presented with an option page.

You will be able to check the box under the "Disable for:" section for "THIS site" and "ALL sites".

Click the save button.

Well first thing this morning I found ads on a page that didn't have ads. I hadn't logged into LJ yet and approved a few member requests for a community. It gave me the standard approval message and there was a big giant ad taking up a large part of the page.

I guess we've found where some of them got put, then.
