LJ/Vox cross pollination: Vox's QoTD to be a new LJ widget

Source: English-strip QotD widget. QoTD stands for Question of the Day.

One thing I'd like to see in LJ that Vox has related to QotD is global tags--I wonder if it's possible that's in the pipeworks in conjunction with the search system.

Global tags is something I'm amased we don't already have given the other public feeds; I'd have thought a front page tag cloud would be op priority considering some of the daft things they are using tag clouds for.

Seriously, when looking for stuff about a particular fandom awhileback, finding posts on Vox was so much easier than on here; wanted reviews of a show I'd missed, but the fannish comms I knew of were full of squee. Vox came through with good stuff, couldn't even penetrate LJ to a basic level.

Not sure about QoTD, it got good write ups as an idea when Vox started, but don't we have memes enough already?

QoTD is more of a global thing. a meme doesn't reach everyone all at the same time. that's how i see it anyway.

(however, i need to remember to poke my vox every now and then to see that there even is a new QoTD.)

I was under the impression that Vox was supposed to be way different from LJ.

So what's with the constant porting between?

i think the goal is to share as much useful tech as we can between the services, and have the biggest distinction be in the types of communities. does that make sense?

there's also that LJ is much more of a get-your-hands-dirty kind of place, where you can tweak things just so. i wouldn't expect a huge fandom community to arise in Vox, for example. (though i am often completely clueless, so grain of salt, etc.) :)

I only just now saw this post, and when you mentioned global tags, I giggled; not because it's a bad idea, but because as far as I know, LJ did something similar before with the Topic Directory. Now, granted, it's not the same thing - this was about sorting posts into pre-existing categories - but it serves a similar purpose. Here's the Topic Directory's old FAQ page, if you want more info on how it worked.)

(BTW, most of the topic-specific pages in the Directory weren't archived; for an example of one that was, go to World News->Terrorist Attack on the World Trade Center.)
