Avoid ads by not logging in with the front page

Jan 20, 2007 02:38

Some people on the recent news post have been noting the ads on the front page before they log in. This is a list of ways to log in besides using the front page:

1. Go to http://www.livejournal.com/login.bml or (https://www.livejournal.com/login.bml for a more secure login) ( Read more... )

Or just use any other site scheme page to log in, like your profile or something?

Logging out automatically takes you to the front page though :(

Added! LJLogin does do logging out. It might also be possible to just manually delete the LiveJournal cookies.

Logging out via the navstrip takes you back to where you are as well, I only look at the front page these days to see what they've done to it. With a keyword search set up in Fx it's quicker to get to my journal anyway. Main reason to keep the navstrip on.

Ah, I generally don't log out at all, only when using a computer other than my own. Which is not too often these days, what with the increasing amount of eyesore I hate not having control over, so it doesn't really affect me that much. Definitely not enough to make me have anything to do with that damn navstrip...

I generally don't log out manually, that totally slipped my mind, hehe.

You could also block ads if you want...

And about LJLogin, it doesn't correctly set your site scheme preferences - if you find yourself with the wrong site scheme you should log out via LJLogin and then back in through the site.

Oh, and logging out via LJLogin does *not* take you back to the front page. I think solitudinarian was talking about logging out normally...

I think I just phrased that wrong--I meant that logging out via LJLogin would prevent you from automatically being taken back to the front page like you would if you logged out normally!

I will rephrase, thank you.

While blocking ads certainly solves the problem, there are reasons while someone might want to use these kinds of methods instead:

1. Logging in on other people's or public computers, where ad blocking isn't available.
2. Maybe the person has a paid account outright ad blocking is too much effort; it's only the front page that matters. (Whereas LJLogin is just plain useful for multiple account users besides!) Or maybe they don't believe in ad blocking, but would like to avoid the ads.

I'll make the note about LJLogin!

I use my.livejournal.com to login at work; it gives a line that says "In order to view this page, you must log in. If you do not have an account, you may create one now," and it's also got a login box. (It includes links to the login.bml page and the "create an account" page, but I ignore those.)
