CProd and Plus Pushing come to the NavStrip!

Jul 28, 2006 01:11

nikolasco has alerted us to some developments with the NavStrip.

What that code means: CProd is coming to the NavStrip! Except only one prod is currently being planned: a reminder about Plus accounts, of course!

The planned CProd will show the text "Get polls for free by switching to Plus", with a "Hide" link beside it ( Read more... )

I can't help thinking that including the prods is a really, really bad idea.

After all, the reason why so many users hate the navigation bar is because it's annoying. CProds are annoying. So adding CProds to the navigation bar may well push things too far for a good number of people. If you thought the bar acceptable on its own, you may well change your mind once it begins to nag you about things.

Ah well. My communities have it turned off, as does my journal, and I'm happily hiding the bar entirely with your lovely little scripts.

I use the NavStrip and now it's going to have prods on it. ::cries::

I think I'm going to back up and delete the two free accounts that I use for personal purposes, as eventually there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to browse around with them without being reminded of Plus accounts at every turn, and it takes too much willpower anymore to not scream, BUT IN THE PAST YEAR I ALREADY GAVE YOU TWO ACCOUNTS WITH EXTRA ICONS, THREE POINT FIVE PAID COMMUNITIES, AND PAID FOR A FRIEND'S ACCOUNT FOR SIX MONTHS, AND I HATE YOUR ADS WITH THE HELLFIRE OF A THOUSAND SUNS.

I guess there's an idea for a GreaseMonkey:

Removal of every single Plus nag that exists on the system, period.

But I would need help in tracking down all of the nags that exist.

I'm currently residing blissfully in paid-user-land, so I'm not getting nagged about plus anymore. At least not that I'm noticing - it wouldn't surprise me if there are still prods suggesting that I go plus.

It would be an interesting script, that's for sure. Since you aren't the only person I know who reacts in capslock to the cattle prods. ;-)

I'm in paid-user-land for 95% of my LJ use, but like I said, I keep a couple of free Basic accounts that I use for personal stuff. They're not connected to people or communities, so it's trivial to back up the information I've stored there and delete them, since it's getting to the point where I feel resentful while logged in on them. It's taken a while. But I think this is that point.

Yay simple kills; now I just have to make a post with the_unadvocate where I copy-paste-insert the guide from the NavStrip removal into a new one...

I really ought to just make a big ol' Wiki page on it. And a gazillion other things.

I've seen the Try out the new Navigation Strip one, but that one made sense, since everyone woke up one day to see it freshly enabled whether they knew about it or wanted it beforehand or no.

I didn't know the Plus one was already live. I guess that means that I should just make the guide now instead of tomorrow. And here I was about to go to bed...

So the navigation strip wasn't for us, it was for them to get the "Whore yourself to our advertisers!" prompts on people's personal pages. Despicable. How am I not surprised...

On the homepage? No, not that I know of.

However, from reading the ad things I get the impression that they'll only serve ads for LJ on the homepage? Ie, ads for Sponsored+ accounts or ads for paid accounts or ads for new features.

I don't know. And see what happened with the badge? It was all about LJ at first.
It also seems that you'll get one whether your logged in or not.

But the badge was never really talked about as being only an LJ ad; it's just what it started out as until they got others.

In any case, they're replacing that boring place where Frank sits and never moves ("this type belongs on the front page roughly where frank always sat.") or does anything useful like promoting Plus accounts.

But badges don't have an Ad-Map type of "App-Home" or "App-Home-Login", which is what these do. You can kind of see the outline of what the different types do here:

http://code.sixapart.com/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/trunk/cgi-bin/adconfig.pl?rev=2934&root=ljcom&view=markup

Maybe I'm going to post about Frank being replaced by an ad, hahaha.
