Oh goodness gravy! it appears that SixApart's new blogging service, Vox, may be stepping on the toes of a preexisting blogging service/community called
voxtropolis.com, which opened for business last year.
Voxtropolis regularly refers to itself as Vox on their website, and it's logo is quite definitely Vox-y.

Of course, if trademarks start clashing, Voxtropolis does have precedence. But Six Apart could probably bribe them outright and settle.

I just browsed a few of their journals and I have to say... it looks kind of awesome. I mean, obviously I'd need to know more about customizability and importability, etc. (and it sounds like they haven't got it all worked out themselves yet), but I really like their concept.
From what I can see, the journals are laid out like standard blogs (with links and blogroll on the right, big banner on top). I've seen no ads. You can "friend" other vox members (which I assume implies privacy levels), but non-vox users can also comment and leave identifying information (something I wish LJ had gotten ages ago).
That's just after a quick browse, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on them.

I just signed up at Voxtropolis. The blog they give you is a wordpress blg with 5 themes to chose from.
There is a VOX setting where you can change the image header and chose between 5 differnet pictures.
There is a widgets side bar where you can add (what we call plugins) which consists of 15 things. some are buildt into WP and others are some plugins I reconize. very common ones.
Then there is Voxscapes, which is where the themes are, there is 5 I have no idea how one could add their own, unless its paid feature.
Basically its a turn key wordpress host which so far ad free and I see no place for any friending or anything.
