Request for Greasemonkey Script Testing: LJ Light Links

Apr 23, 2006 14:36

I found out that "?format=light" pages don't show ads, so I've made my first GreaseMonkey script:

LJ Light Links

kunzite1 and sasuko have helped me test it some, but if anyone who knows how to run GreaseMonkey is interested in giving it a test run and letting me know about any other problems or suggestions, I'd appreciate the feedback. In a few days, I will ( Read more... )

^^; I feel a little bad about asking this--since it seems like I'm asking for a lot, but I was wondering...is it possible for the "Use Original Style" option to be added to just next to the cut location? Because at present, if it's used on a cut--and one wishes to turn it back, the options are to either delete the ?format=light manually--or to scroll all the way to the top to get it changed.

But then again, I don't know how it can work if you have the "permanent link" option clicked?

I think it should be pretty easy to add the option right by the cut location, assuming you clicked the link. I wouldn't want to add it at every single cut that might be in the entry or click the permanent link, but if you click on the cut link itself, I can enter it right where the cut location is. Would that be good?

I'll probably be able to do that tomorrow, if you like.

*when you click the permanent link -- also append: since the permanent link starts out at the top.

It took less time than I thought it would and I managed to fit that change into a study break.

Try it and see whether you like it. Make sure you let me know whether you find anything that goes wrong with it.

Thank you so much for this! I almost always use format=light when I read other people's entries and I was getting so tired of writing it manually.

I made heavy use of it yesterday and have so far found no problems. (I use Mac OS X 10.4.6 and Firefox 1.5.0.4.)

This sounds *really* useful, and exactly what I've been looking for (seriously, what is with the horrible color combinations people come up with? Dark blue backgrounds with purple text? WTF?) - but I've never used a GreaseMonkey script. How do I install and use it?

First install GreaseMonkey. You will need to use Firefox for that.

After Greasemonkey is installed, click on the LJ Light Links link above. It'll warn you you're about to install a script, but when the timer runs out, click Install and you should be good to go.

If you like, I could make a version of the script that does ?style=mine (or find one--I think it already exists), if it's only color combinations and not ads you want to avoid.

Ahh, the only real problem is that I use IE rather than Firefox. Oh well, at least I know it's possible - now I just have to find out how to do it for my browser. Thanks, though, for the quick response.

Maybe Trixie or Turnabout. I don't have access to IE, though, so I can't help you configure them to work with the script.
