i just want to say YES, THIS to everything you said about magic mike xxl. i kept waiting for mike and zoe to hook up, and was pleasantly surprised when they didn't. and the thing about richie dancing in the convenience store that i loved the most? the girl doesn't smile until he asks how much he owes for the water and cheetos. like, what a ridiculously normal (and polite and considerate!) thing for him to say, after having bumped and ground all over the cooler and humped the floor and given her a show. "what do i owe you for the water and cheetos?" and she just cracks up. the show is for her - ok, and to prove something to himself and his fellow strippers - and he doesn't feel entitled to anything in exchange, including free water and snacks.

and yeah, the really great thing about the guys and their dancing and their attitude towards women is that they want to make these ladies happy. that's the whole point of what they do - to make women want to smile. which was what made andre's speech about being a healer so lovely. he ( ... )

One of the reviews called his question ("How much for the water and the Cheetos?") a punchline, and it confused me but I didn't stop to think why, and this is EXACTLY IT. Sure, I laughed at the line, just as I laughed at every single thing in that scene; but that line made me laugh with joy more than with its inherent comedy, because of the lack of entitlement it communicated to the woman.
