I think you misheard something on SPN. They said that these witches weren't goddess worshipping Wiccans, but were in fact, real, evil witches.

I'm going to need to look at the actual script. The exposition by the demon who infiltrated the "book club" was pretty specific; they THOUGHT (or wanted to believe) they were praying to the Goddess, but were in fact doing a deal with her.

They were praying to the book, and since at least 3 of the 4 used magic to kill, and all 4 used magic for selfish ends, then they were practicing some extremely dark arts.

Sam does specifically say he isn't talking about Wiccans but about black magic. One of the interesting points I thought the demon brought up was the Secret. It's this whole 'name it and claim it' school of thought / fundamentalism roughly equates to God wanting you to have material wealth and if you have the right mindset, you'll get it. I'll admit, that has always sounded like magic for selfish ends to me.

Not that SPN isn't misogynistic, but I didn't get the vibe especially form this episode.

Ah, got it - thanks for the play-by-play. My issue was with whether or not the whole tapping-into-evil thing was intentional on the part of the group, and whether they made a conscious decision to kill anyone (well, other than the scorned lover who decided to take revenge). Sam can "diagnose" black magic, but I wasn't sure if the book club members could.

(But the female body count was damn high, regardless.)

Excellent point about the Secret, btw; I remember reading a great column about the egocentric nature of such texts, and how interesting it is to see them popping up at times when, say, global warming is a major issue.

OMG BLADES OF GLORY. I totally forgot.

Betting John's mother died when he was young too. Need to do a post on larger-than-life father figures and absent mother figures in SGA & House.

I know! Male bonding indeed.

Re: mother's death, I think you're right. Also, looking forward to that analysis!

Yay! Because, really: Rodney/Jeannie, John, Teyla, House, Chase and Foreman all have father issues; and the three on SGA haven't even mentioned their mothers; and none on either show has mentioned a mother without a father.

I just. I can't get over the hilarity that is Ronon watching Earth movies. I'm imagining him with a Netflix account, and anything that sounds remotely as if it's about fighting has been bookmarked.

In annoying news, my freelance job now looks like it's going through February. :(

Want to try for dinner and a movie Thursday or Friday?

I love your take on Ronon's body language. Good point, there, and YES Jason, you are awesome. And Ronon is the hottest thing evar, like ANYONE believes he's just a civilian contractor -- we all know he's a "civilian contractor" with air quotes.

In conclusion: OH JOHN.
