Twenty six years. They still kept track of colony time. Vestigial modes of time measurement based on solar cycles*. It's not really applicable now. She pays the days, weeks, years almost zero attention. The point of them seems lost.
Almost forgets days entirely, but somehow, she still remembers his birthday. Crawls into his rack once everyone else is asleep. Tickles him awake, rubs his back, sings "Happy Birthday" to him under her breath.
"Thank you." He smiles softly, cupping her face.
She shrugs, "Whatever. I didn't get you anything, Mr. Twenty Six."
"This is enough." He promises. "More than."
"No birthday sex required, then? " She jokes lightly. "I was prepared to go all out."
He shakes his shake, pulling her into his chest. "Not tonight." He murmurs tiredly. "I'm out of gas."
"OK, then." She teases midyawn. "Night, grandpa."
He's already asleep.
