They never took them off. Even in the darkness of their rack as their bodies pushed and pulled angrily against one another. When every other inch of skin was bare and warm with hunger, the thin metal tags remained. Cool reminders against burning skin. Constantly calling them back from the oblivion of flesh. Reminding them that their promise to the fleet always had to come first. Even before this. Afterward, as they lay in a sweaty jumble of weak but satisfied limbs, their tags were always left tangled together, holding their wearers close, when they might otherwise run. Lee complained when she made him untangled the jangling knots. She just smiled as he worked, they both knew that his bitching didn't mean anything. Even though he whined every time, he'd never suggested taking them off. Neither had she. Some things were more important than them right now. But maybe not always, she thought hopefully despite her mind's warnings. Maybe one day, she prayed, they'd be free. She imagined what it might feel like then, to pull his naked form
