But basically- I tidied up an LJ post and submitted it for a class last year (newswriting) and my professor pitched it to the Courier-Journal. They didn't have time last Christmas, so this year he pitched it before Thanksgiving. He told

I once let my Gmail spam folder climb to 2000 emails. When I started going through it, I saw important emails that I missed. Since then, I go through it every day...sometimes every couple of hours, just to make sure I'm not missing something. They say to add addresses to your contact list so that it won't go into the spam folder. They lie. It still goes in the spam folder.

Chalk it up to experience; I have to check my spam folder regularly at work, not just in gmail. Re-do it for Valentines' Day as suggested, and bring Prof. Merkel a plate of something yummy with a note of apology telling him that you've learned from now on to always check spam.
