I assert that most men wouldn't even know what those scents actually smelled like. Scents and men are like colors and men. Consider that (most) men note things in variations of primary colors -- "dark red", "light blue", etc. Women seem to use 1,923,687,583 colors -- most of which I think reside entirely in their imagination. E.g., WTF is the difference between "egg shell white" and "off white?" (I had to look up those names ( ... )

"ylang ylang bourbon"
I just thought the name was a hoot.)

ha! that name IS a hoot. >:)

well, some of the scents you actually would recognize if you smelled them. clove, f'r instance, is kind of sweet, and is usually in with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. easiest way to get that one? smell a bag of whole cloves. >;)

another example would be vetiver. you know what patchouli smells like, right? vetiver smells similar to patchouli, but not as musky. it's a really deep, earthy scent.

then again, as you said, it might be like describing color to a blind person. but not because you're a guy. i know plenty of guys (including my dad and chadu, for the record) who do know a fair amount about this stuff. i also know plenty of women who don't. >:) if it ain't your thing, it ain't your thing, and that's okay. thanks for the input.
