Why don't vegetarians enjoy?

I think vegetarians are starting to make me violent... Well, it's just that very few have a solid rationale for their restrictive eating habits ( Read more... )

I'm mostly vegetarian because I just don't like the taste of meat. That's my rationale. I am having chicken for dinner though... Does that make you angry? ;)

Well, to my mind humans 'enjoy' but any disturbance to our enjoyment -- i.e. you're not liking the taste of meat -- indicates a problem. My theory is that we can enjoy everything there is, but this has a two-fold consequence: 1) where we are not enjoying something while we enjoy other things indicates there is some problem to be overcome (call me a radical idealist if you want), and 2) we only enjoy because we 'lack' a degree of wholeness in some fundamental way -- i.e. there would be no pleasure/pain if we were whole, but in being whole there can be no enjoyment/value in the world and hence existence is meaningless.

That may explain the restless feelings I get sometimes when everything in my life appears to be going well...

But yet, this state of being "whole" is something we all still strive to obtain, right? I think we all lack a degree of wholeness.. It's a part of being alive.

If we did not have selfish desires.. wouldn't some philosophers say we would have no motivation at all? Every movement we make is because we desire something. It seems to be well-integrated with the act of living.

why do you care what personal choices other people make?

related: would you be as angry if i told you that i don't wear red clothes, ever? would you say "claudia has no sound rationale for her restrictive clothing palette!" ?

How is a rationale ever sound? It seems to only be measured by its own 'logic'. Such is the dreadful nepotism of reason.

Clothes don't irk me as much as food, largely because I grew up with a foody family who emphasised the variety of cuisine above all else. I'm just a product of that nexus.

i just don't understand, and in fact violently reject, this idea that enjoyment is an objective state (apparently measured by you!) to which others must conform.

well. it is one of the problems anyway. The other is the inability to ever be happy with public transportation.
