The Doctor stares into the fire.

So many losses.

They could take out a hundred Daleks for every Time Lord lost and they would still be overwhelmed by numbers. Davros can afford to throw away wave after wave of Daleks and still come out ahead. How do you fight an enemy like that?

Ace has a flower.

Well, actually, it's paper, impregnated with accelerant, twisted into the shape of a flower, but the basic statement holds.

She is determinedly not thinking about Daleks.

It's amazing how persistent Daleks are, even when you're trying not to think of them. Eventually she gives up, and peers around the fire at her fellow refugee from the chaos going on down in the valley.

"Penny for'em. My supplies of tea are gettin' low, or I'd bribe y'with that too."

He looks down at the flower. "I'm surprised you're not burning Daleks in effigy," he says with a ghost of a smile.

"The people are losing hope," he continues abruptly. "Without a decisive victory to our name, morale is fading. All we can do is fall back. Again and again, fall back. Like trying to hold back the tide. Sooner or later, the ocean always wins."

Ace momentarily debates pointing out that tides generally go in both directions, but it seems... somewhat cruel.

"At least most everyone's off the planet." She offers instead. "Visited the academy yesterday, it's well creepy without anyone around."
