Congratulations and thanks to Barack Obama

Tonight, the damndest thing happened: the guy I voted for won an election. The person I voted _for_, rather than the placeholder I used for voting _against_, won an election. First time since ... well, forever, since before this election I've never had a candidate I could honestly support ( Read more... )

I've been singing that Simon song, too. For a while, actually, but especially last night. I do fervently believe that our president elect loves America the way I do.

Even with my crushing dissapointment at the evident narrow passage of prop 8, I keep pinching myself.

They say this is a great American moment and I believe them.

I, too, am amazed for many of these reasons; but you, as always, have stated it so much eloquently.

I have never felt so much pure relief at the result! ... and the interest the English people have shown in this election is absolutely unprecedented. The customers in our shop come from all sorts of backgrounds and stations in life - it is that sort of area ... but the number of them who came in this morning all blearly-eyed from having sat up all night to watch the results come in on the TV shocked all of us, as were the open expressions of their feelings - quite unlike the usually tight-lipped British!

Being one year older than you I was able to vote against Nixon (I voted for Spock, but only after it was clear that McGovern had lost). Twice before I've voted for the winner (1976 and 1992), but both times with far more misgivings. I admired Carter's intelligence and character, but I didn't have a lot of faith in his ability to lead, and time bore me out. I admired Clinton's intelligence and leadership, but was afraid he was an untrustworthy character. He lost me when he almost immediately flip-flopped on gays in the military, and later developments showed just how poor his judgment was (can you say Monica?). This is the first guy who I know is intelligent, a leader, and who really seems to have some character. You know he won't squander his political capital on some intern (besides I don't think Michelle would roll over for it like Hillary did). He's bound to disappoint his left wing, but maybe he can start moving the center to the left, just like the GOP has moved it right ever since 1968. Added bonus: the cutest kids in the White ( ... )
