Thoughts on Writing and Blogging

Mar 14, 2009 11:31

February has been a strange month.  An odd combination of laziness and productivity.

At work, I've been strangely unmotivated.  I'm doing my best to keep up with my deadlines and get my main jobs done, but I've been very lackadaisical with my reports and other things that I can "get away" with being late on.  It's not that I dislike my job (although ( Read more... )

I was just talking to Nick about blogging lately and said that there should be someone out there in the know who posts the top ten markets for people wanting to sell short stories, poetry and novels. It could be updated every month, or whatever. That would bring MUCHO traffic.

I can't do it, I'm out of the loop and way too busy. Just an idea. :)

Glad to see your writing zooming along! :)

That's an awesome idea, Marcy. I'd give real money for someone to do the top current story markets. Even up-to-the-minute closings or openings. I just might do that.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm going to finish this novel! I'm afraid someone's going to find my slumped over my keyboard, having typed the words THE END. Sometimes I feel like it's a parasite keeping me a live until I bring it to light, and when it's written, that's it. :)

Hey, that's a cool story!

Hey, I think you're amazing for writing that much every night! The most I have been able to do is two pages!

Don't be too worried about feeling lackadaisical (LOVE that word!). Everyone I know is feeling that way right now. Don't you think part of it is winter? We're so close to spring, but not quite there yet, so I know that it makes us feel pensive.

As far as getting traffic, have you tried websites like twitter or stumbledupon? I have an etsy shop, and they've helped get more viewers. Keep posting it on facebook, that's how I found it! ;)

You've really inspired me to start writing again, thank you! Love your guts, keep pushing forward!

It's not about quantity, it's about consistency. If you can do one or two pages on a consistent basis, celebrate the hell out of that! It's two pages a day more than I did almost every day of 2006.

Winter might be it. I've about had it with the gray skies and low temperatures. The economy might be part of it too -- some of us have settled into a "What difference does it make?" mentality.

I'm on twitter. Anyone who wants to follow can look for nitewanderer. I haven't messed enough with stumbleupon. I guess I'm going to have to do that. :)

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm very glad to have helped!

Greetings! David Farland's "Kick in the Pants" is covering some of these concepts this week. Want me to send you some back issues?

I'm jealous of how many words a day you're writing.

I'm a little worrried about how much time I spend on Facebook "reconnecting" with friends. I'm so glad to be in contact with old friends, like you. But I wonder if I should be writing instead. :(

If you have a choice between blogging and writing I'd go with the writing. Just put a thought on Facebook if you need to vent, or need contact, or whatever. What do you think?

My wife threatens to kick me in the trousers if I don't. :) You can do it too!

I was worried about that too, but then I started telling myself I don't get to goof off on FB unless I do an equal amount of work -- as kind of a reward. Don't lose those friends -- they're what it's all about.

I'm going to need to blog a bit -- I want to raise traffic here so if anyone sees Mark Worthen's name in the drug store, they'll buy the book! :D

Take care, man.

I've got a lot less folks reading my blogs these days - primarily because I'm sporadic and often monomaniacal - all too often focusing in on word count and current projects.

I've decided that I primarily write the journal as a form of shadow-boxing. I believe I've sold a few copies of a few odd books, (I don't write any even ones), but it's definitely not a viable marketing mechanism for me - yet.

So I write the journal for the fun of it. I leave the writing of entertaining and/or enlightening journals to other folks.
