… and then what you say about collective farms! And "ameliorator"! Love these sorts of names. Oh, I see--ameliorator, in this case, referring to improving the land (as they attempted with the Drunken Mary field, unsuccessfully). In that case, it's not a euphemism at all--I was thinking it had somehow to do with "ameliorating" people's feelings about collectivization, but that's not the case at all, I see!
And mandatory "volunteer" work--when you refer to these things just casually, it makes me shiver because there's so much that's unsaid. . .
