The Doctor was in a terrible mood. Normally, that meant he would just go off and brood until he decided to stop feeling so sorry for himself. But he'd offered to see Romana, and she welcomed such company. He was more than thrilled at the thought of seeing her again, even if the reason they were meeting was due to poor emotional stability and bad ( Read more... )

Romana stepped out and moved forward to give The Doctor a firm hug. "So are you -- and I like the monochromatic look you have going right now." She tugged approvingly at one of the black leather lapels on his jacket ( ... )

Romana nodded. "I need another person to get the synchronization keys aligned, so let's work on that."

As the two adjusted sequences and meters in coordination, Romana murmured, "We may have lost the War, but that doesn't mean we give in. I don't think it's possible to stop what we naturally do. And my ship will fly again, and...well, I'll find something that needs to be done in the way that only I can do it. And Prettyboy's manic moods will pass, if the fates are willing. And I'm not losing touch with you again."

"He's got manic moods, has he?" Ooooh, he only hoped they weren't as bad as the little display of mood swinging he just showed off. "It's a wonder anyone likes him. Well, of course people would like him; he's me, after all. Still, starts makin' me wonder how he's gotten so popular. Might want to get in touch with my fifth self; I know he's around somewhere. Lot less manic. A lot. And you're right, not gonna lose touch with me. Because if somehow you did, I'd find a way to get to you. Not just gonna let an old friend get away that easily."

((Good god, sorry about that. He kept telling me he'd be done after the next paragraph, but then he kept on going. <<; ))

Romana found it extremely convenient at that point to duck her head inside the console base casing to examine a dodgy connection.

I'm not going to say a thing like I told him in his current incarnation. Not a thing. It didn't work then, and it likely wouldn't work now. So just bite your tongue, Romana!

She took a deep gasp of air, and pulled back once again to look over at The Doctor with a wry expression on her face. "Well, that's the thing -- he is you, and so how can anyone resist? But we all go through our regrettable regeneration personalities. I've just been fortunate I've only had one bad one so far."

"Ah, right, the ones that we can hardly believe are ourselves. But then, it'd be a bit dull to live as long as we do with the same face and same personality. A little change is good for the soul! So to speak."

"Well, the one thing that I'm glad of is that for better or worse, I'm free from bureaucracy hell. I tried cooking the other day, and it turned out quite decently. I thought I might drag out the harp too; at one point during my Academy days, I was actually quite good at that. I'm terribly rusty now, though."

"I think I still have my old recorder around somewhere. I'd probably be rubbish at it now. But hey, here's to the end of all that political nonsense. Bit surprising there was never a revolution or anything. At least to revolt against those ceremonial robes!"

"And those awful shoulderpieces that were constantly trying to slip off backwards! If I do set up any kind of renewed society of Time Lords, I'm going to make those terribly declasse'. Can't ban them, otherwise they'll be all the rage. I'd reorganize the paperwork trail, too. The inefficiency was maddening! I'd...well, if I could rework the society, I'd see to it that we weren't so penned up inside, never getting out. I always felt that in a way, the Shebogans were right about that bit. Leela would often go on walkabouts outside the Dome, and everyone thought she was mad, except for me and Andred."

"Yeah! See, that's what I was thinkin' all along. I mean, you can't really just tell everyone that they can go off and do whatever they want; then time itself would be a whole mess of trouble, you'd get Reapers, and the universe would probably come to an end. But you can't just keep everyone in. Of course people are gonna want to go and see what's out there, and there's nothing wrong with that. 'Course, then I wouldn't get to be one of those oh-so-special renegades, would I?" He wondered for a moment before voicing carefully aloud, "I suppose Leela's gone, too, isn't she? Was there 'til the end?"

Romana nodded, her expression tight. "She'd been serving as my bodyguard, while I was president. But at the end, she bundled me into my TARDIS and stayed behind with her husband. I asked her to come with me, Doctor, but she wouldn't leave Andred. And to be truthful, I didn't expect her to."

"Then why didn't he go along, too? What was the point of staying behind on a rather doomed planet?"

"Andred was Castellan at that time -- and there were things that had to be done. Don't ask me to ennumerate them; at this point, it's all a blur to me." Romana shook her head. "There are always 'things that have to be done', aren't there?"

"Always. 'Course, what has to be done now is fixin' your ship. And then we'll go from there. We can make plans as we go. Deal with things as they come. I was never very big on plans."

Romana looked up from the readout screen that she had been perusing. "Do you know, a century ago I would have said that whereas you were never very big on plans, I was all about having the plans. But now...now, it might not be so bad for me to fly without said plans for a bit, I think."

"There you go, brilliant, go out and try something new for once. The TARDIS does most of the driving anyway, it seems. Hope yours doesn't end up acting up as much as mine when we're through with it. I mean, there's going wherever the hell you've always wanted to go, and there's going where you never thought possible. Who knows, maybe you'll find yourself a couple of people to keep you company. Never really the same, going it alone versus sharing the experiences."

Romana nodded thoughtfully, feeling a multitude of thoughts welling up in her head.

If I actually desired to look for other Time Lords, I'd need to actually get out and look. But then I told The Doctor...the future Doctor...that I wasn't going to leave again. But then again, perhaps he & Aislinn need some distance from me at the moment. Is there a way to find a happy medium? Perhaps I need just to have a conversation when we aren't both overwrought and upset...

She looked up again. "You're absolutely right -- not to mention the fact that often more can be achieved if there's more than just oneself."

Romana took a deep breath. "So -- I think we've covered much of the major damage here. Would you mind flying in tandem with me in your TARDIS to Varos, so that we can see if the basic systems are operating more stably? Then I can get the Zeiton-7 levels up to where they should be, and we check out the repairs at the same time."
