I find it interesting that, in AFI's Top 10 animated films, all but one are Disney films...

Until recently no one even made decent ones besides Disney and Pixar. I love those AFI lists and disagree with so many of their choices - that's the fun part.

Eh, I had to remind myself when they were first announcing the list it's strictly American. None of their lists feature films that don't meet their definition of being an "American" film. So, the Animation list is going to be dominated by Disney. I don't think people even began to try to compete with Disney here until it had become enough of an institution that some of its own animators were leaving to start up their own companies.
