I think this is pretty goddamn cool and true, and another reason i love this man so much

"Why We Write" by Damon LindelofI was listening to the news on NPR the other day and two things occurred to me. First, only assholes feel the constant need to tell you they listen to NPR (does anyone ever say, “So I was watching the CW last night…”?) and I guess that makes me an asshole. The second was that in the midst of listening to the story ( Read more... )

I write because I can’t help but make things up.

I write because I love to tell stories.

I write because my imagination compels me to do so.

I write because if I didn’t, I’d be branded a pathological liar.

Oh, and also because I’m still trying to make my dead father proud of me.

I teared up a little, mostly because all of these are the same reasons I write. Well said.

And that story is ocmpelling, plausible, and fantastic.

Oh man, yeah, it's extremely well said, the part about being branded a pathological liar if he didn't write, I think that applies to SO many people that write, it's just no one ever says it out loud.

That story is amazing, I honestly thought that would be true with deciding how much info you want to be given etc, he's really got a way with words being subtle and still bitingly real.

i'm really glad you liked it <3

Exactly. I do find myself...not lying, really, though I used to, years ago, but exaggerating the truth more when I haven't been writing. It's like my brain, if I'm not writing, stops being able to filter the things that come from my brain into conversation. I don't know if that even makes sense.

I also think that there are a lot of failed writers who are labeled psychopathic, or borderline schizophrenic because they never learned to picked up a pen.

Have you ever seen the movie Quills? It's a really good portrayal in how people can go mad and get so pent up without the outlet of writing. Well, among other things.

This is pretty incredible -- I totally bought that story. Damon is an awesome guy, and what he had to say here is very true. Do you mind if I steal this to re-post at my journal? I'm sure some of the writers on my flist would appreciate it, Losties or othewise.

I totally bought that story too, and I was really involved and intrigued by the 9/ll part changing policy. He's pretty incredible, I love reading everything he writes. And please, feel free to re-post, it's funny becuase I mostly posted it for my writer friends, because I think it applies so much to all of us.
