I picked this up from a box of secondhand books knowing it would be preposterous and lo and behold it was.

Have you read The Blue Nowhere yet? That's possibly the most preposterous Deaver book I've ever read. It contains such gems as a computer programmer who routinely breaks keyboards through the power of TYPING TOO HARD. It's nucking futs.

I've not read that one but this one does have a similar key-destroying character.

If memory serves Junky as by William Lee was originally an Ace Double - I think with the memoirs of a narc as the other half. Meanwhile Dick got away with heroin bars in The World Jones Made and no one seems to have batted an eyelid.
