You've beaten me to it! I was busy writing a post in my head on just this subject. In fact, I'd planned to write it a few weeks ago, prompted by getting annoyed by one too many episode of QI, in which "yawn!" is the expected response to any scientific explanation, and one too many repeat of Friends episodes, when we're expected to sympathise with all the other characters who yawn whenever Ross talks about fossils, but the debate earlier today reminded me

I think 'mixed' A Levels are more common now. We were quite pleased that my daughter could do History Philosophy Latin and Maths at A Level, and she did some Further Maths modules for fun. I guess that is one of the advantages of a large school.
Back at my (very small) grammar school a friend could not take Art with sciences, even though he wanted to take Architecture as a degree and needed to present a portfolio. It was all down to timetabling. My wife, now with PhD and university post, was told at her Girls grammar school that only thickies did sciences.
Now, the Battle of Waterloo, is that something to do with Abba???
Willful stupidity is the new chic. If you don't believe, we always have Paris Hiltons and Britneys with their millions of intellectually challenged followers reminding us of the new world order. Math and geekdom apparently invoke visions of thick Coke-bottle glasses, acne vulgaris, chess clubs, role-playing games, and eternity without sex. In a nutshell, math doesn't seem to be "cool". Then again, the Western mankind with all it's high technology is basically comprised of idiot savants, so actual idiocy seems to fit in snugly...
