This could be your English teacher Mary Mattner, or it might be your super-best-friend Seth. I have come to inform you that "of late" is actually a very widespread and frequently used expression. For example, in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, there is a point where Theoden, King of Rohan says "Dark have been my dreams of late." The expression means "recently", and is usually preceded by an adverb. Furthermore, your mockery of my usage and vast knowledge of the English language notwithstanding, I forgive you for this minor grammatical error on your part, and look forward to raving into the new year with you tomorrow. Say hello to 2005!!!
Love, Mary Mattner (or Dawson!?)
