To laptop or not?

It's been a tough decision, but I've decided to go laptop-less in Japan. My desktop replacement is too heavy to be that portable, and taking my work laptop is an invitation to do... work. Instead, I'll rely exclusively on my ipod touch and Nintendo DS for browsing the web and mobile posting via hotspots, and my Motorola Q 9h for cell coverage (I've ( Read more... )

Hard to say. Ever since I got my Macbook it's been imminently portable. I carry it around with me fairly often, vacation or not. And even without a laptop my iPhone still has basic internet functionality. However, keep in mind you're going to Japan, which is well known for having internet cafes. Mostly I'd recommend just having a thumb drive set up with Firefox, Thunderbird, and your IM client of choice. You probably won't need anything other than those for internet cafe use unless you plan to upload images to Flickr or something on the fly.

Never understood why people would want to take their laptops, really.

Just a bunch of weight that will remind you of work and detract from the immersion in a completely new culture and environment.

I wouldn't take the thumbdrive either.

Camera. MP3 player. That's about it.
