Didn't know about the cayenne pepper trick, but I know that a box worth of napthalene mothballs shot into the attic through the window with a slingshot will keep even persistent raccoons out of the attic really well.

I remember the legend of Raccoon and Crawfish. I don't remember if it was in the NY State Museum's or the Bruce Museum's Native Americans exhibit, but I clearly remember seeing the story in a replica dwelling.

Place a portable radio as near their den as possible. Tune it to one of the talk show programs and turn up the volume as high as it will go.

If on the other hand they seem to like talk radio, you most likely have coonservatives. Don't give them crayfish; teach them to fish. They're slightly less likely to steal your shiny objects.
