The things you learn each day

I received a nice little package today from amazon with three books in it. One of them was "Stark Trek 365" by Paula M Block with Terry J Eromann. What I found in flicking through it was that it included character bios from the "Star Trek Writers Guide", third revision, dated April 17 1967 ( Read more... )

I found it so interesting in what the epic Spock/Kirk friendship was based upon compared to McCoy/Kirk. There is no mention of anyone else in Spock's entry, whereas Kirk's mentions both Spock and McCoy and Bones' has Kirk prominently in it.

I always did wonder what was on Spock's computer.

Also, Jo becomes a nurse? She should totally have been a writer.

Why be a doctor when you can be a nurse? I really hate the implication that a doctor is better profession than a nurse. My mum is a nurse, a lot of my friends and nurses and some had scores high enough to be doctors but chose nursing instead. It isn't a case of of I'm not good enough to be a doctor, so a nurse will be the next best thing. They do different things for a patient. ;)

You are welcome.

I loved the Scotty entry! Yup, he most definitely bossed around Kirk at times!

he mentions that Chekov is a 'Kirk in training'

I have had this in mind pretty much all the time when writing Chekov (and it's one of the reasons I love Kirk-Chekov interaction).

Thanks for posting this!

You are most welcome!

I do the same. With Chekov there is a little more of a wide eyed innocence about him, although the quick to temper was in both TOS Chekov and Kirk. I need to write more Chekov I think. Interesting that Sulu is pretty much described as a flighty chatterbox almost yet the fanon version of Chekov seems to fit this bill on a more regular basis.

I have one fic in progress where I get to explore Scotty more and that has been so much fun. He is woefully underused in stories at times.

Definitely! And I think, though it's not mentioned here, he is a bit of a flighty chatterbox, too (and that's why he and Sulu get on so well, even if you don't ship them as hard as I do). He'll have to temper that if he wants to grow up into Jim Kirk, though ;)

I can't wait to see it! I really love Scotty, I think he's beloved of many, but it's hard to get him in sometimes. We should all endeavor to use more Scotty :D

I love Sulu/Chekov as well. To me they are both very indulgent in allowing the other to be as nerdy as they like. It's a very accepting relationship. Although I really want to write something now where I can have Bones grumble about Chekov's navigation one time, "amazed the kid didn't direct us back to Russia..." :D

The fic is a Regency AU, so Scotty gets to be a Duke (of Doohan) and is best friends with McCoy and pulls him into lots of scrapes.

Yes, the world needs moar Scotty!

MacGyver can retire his paperclips and duct tape, Scotty has got this one!

I was blown away reading those bios. I remember watching TOS and thinking wtf are they on about with the epic K/S, it's the trio in here and the heart is definitely McCoy. I always thought there was more Spock/McCoy scenes and moments than there was Kirk/Spock. Then once I watched the movies closely I figured out that that was where they were getting it from, but McCoy is still very important to the pair of them in the movies.

The implication in that bio is that the friendship between the Captain and Spock would have happened regardless if it was Pike the Captain instead, or even Janice Lester...
