Brilliant job. I knew they mirrored each other a lot this episode but never realized how much.

I love how in synch they are in this episode, see my icon! I actually think it is one of the best eps to observe their relationship, the way they work together and most importantly, the quiet ease they have with each other. There is a moment when Jack glances at Ianto, who looks straight ahead, not back at him. I like that as it is a theme you see with them, Jack will often glance, or even gaze at Ianto, who remains on task. I think it is about Jack's power, he has nothing to lose really, but Ianto is more careful to not let his feelings show, he always has been.

I really don't mind this episode at all, it is lovely to look at, and the creepy guys are quite creepy. I really like Jack and Ianto as a kind of Morse/Lewis. I also think Christina is lovely. It is better than the dead Owen arc dead man walking is much worse (God save us from the Roddenberry machine thingy) (this is possibly because I am more interested in watching J/I interact than the others, and can't bear wooden Martha)

Oh I loved Martha, to me she was Gwen done right in her interactions with Jack. That was the camadarie they try to get with Gwen and Jack, but it just doesn't quite work. With Martha, Jack was so open and sharing and giggly like two friends having a chat. He is never that relaxed around most of the others.

To me Jack's desire with Ianto is to stop being the Captain, the hero in the big coat, just just relax and be the man. The Doctor has an idea about Jack and he hasn't changed his mind, Gwen, Tosh and Owen all have him on a pedestal ideal. I think Jack wants to shout out about Ianto but knows that Ianto isn't ready for that yet. That isn't power, that is respect.

Oh i meant that Jack is in power in the work setting, Thus he can get away with being more obvious. Whereas Ianto has a lot to lose. He needs the others to view him as the same as them, not Jack's favourite, at least professionally. That's why he is so much more circumspect.

My problem with Martha is all to do with acting, she is very bad. All her rhythms are wrong, as if she hasn't had lessons. (The others are markedly better, and it was a relief to have a good actress in Catherine Tate last DW.) I just can't believe her at all. As my friends say, as if you would trust Martha with anything, let alone that end of the world key thing. I also get irritated by the Dougie Houser approach to medicine, which they haven't done as badly with Owen. Oh and I hated when she kissed Jack, made me cringe.

See I think she does a good job with Martha, it's the material she had to deal with. I haven't seen the majority of her DW eps, but was going on her last three in season 3 and her interactions in TW. I believed in the character there.

Jack does have the power in the work relationship, yes, but he tries to hide his attraction for Ianto in front of the others. That is more out of respect. Jack knew that Ianto needed the others to think of him as an equal after Cyberwoman, so he steps back and tries to draw Ianto into the team. Once he is in the team and Ianto has forgiven himself then Jack starts to allow himself to show his feeligns more. Before this, alot of his body language was unconcious and trying not to show favourtism as you say.

From what I understand about spoilers for season three - Ianto's whole story in season three will be the 'Fragments' on FOOTR in my opinion. Feel free to msg me if you want to hear what I think. *wink*

We won't ever see them outside TW unfortunately, they are a mirror to the Gwen/Rhys relationship. G/R are the 'normal' relationship in the real world, so we have to see that to be shown the differences in Gwen's life between real and TW. Jack/Ianto show us what it is like on the inside. We don't need to see them outside of TW, it isn't relevant to show us that. Mores the pity, I know we all want to see it, but it isn't relevant to the episodes *sad*

You didn't mention another vital bit. When Jack is freaked by the circus music in the hub at the start, who is it he yells for? How frustrated does he appear when Tosh can't provide the answers to his questions? Whose name is on his lips as the one who would know!!! And how quickly does he leg it out of the hub to find him!!

I think that bit is very important in commenting on J/I!!

Jack seems to be becoming reliant on Ianto to a certain extent!

The first thing Jack says is "Tosh?" because he has walked out from where he is making a cup of something for himself. He sees her working there and adresses her. He doesn't call for Ianto.

Jack mentions Ianto as the person who would know if there was a travelling fair or circus in town. He asks Tosh where he is and when Tosh informs him that he has gone to the cinema with Gwen and Owen, that is when Jack runs off. Yes that final part is important, but your first assumption is not correct.

Well, the Ianto bit of this episode isn't up yet, so I'll add it here (sorry for being out of order)

When Jack and Ianto are in the hospital, Jack says 'From out of the Rain,' and the nurse says that she's heard that, and that it was from a patient at a mental institution, Providence Park, and Ianto takes a breath, swallows, glances at Jack, and says, 'I know it.' I know you caught it, how couldn't you, but I just love that bit. First thought in my head was 'What if Ianto's mother is in Providence Park?'

I mean, from Almost Perfect (if we're accepting books as canon) we find out that Ianto's father is dead, an all we know is that he has a sister named Rhiannon, and she's married to Johnny, and their name is Evans. What about his mother though?

I agree that the writing in this episode is a step above terrible, but if it ties in with CoE, then I think I might just love it.

Again, brilliant job, and I know I'm commenting around, but stuff just pops out, and I have to mention it :P

And since they did the Archives, RTD did a whole name change thingy and Rhiannon and Johnny's surname is now Davies, which mean the poor nephew is called David Davies!

Trace Memory has mention of Ianto's mum, who is apparently still alive. I take the books etc as canon. If it has been approved and checked and comes out under the official licence, then it is canon for my mind.
