At least you still *have* a 401k... :)... so there is something there.

RE: the remodel, since its been going on 3 years... I would say that you are heartily sick of it and a relatively small sacrifice to get it done should be tolerable. Especially, when you can see the fruits of said sacrifice.

Also, w/Wish going out of town for so long (not sure the timing on your conventions), leaving the daughter-unit unattended may not be a good idea. (So says the one who's 16yo just returned from a 9-month exchange from Germany, but wouldn't trust the 18yo 9 HOURS alone... LOL).

I hope you are progressing in your therapy. Give my love to the fam.....

Thanks. The daughter-unit was going to stay overnight with a friend for FantaSci. Archon isn't until October.

I still have to decide if I can afford to go to the Southeast Kendo Federation tournament in October to test for nidan. Course that'll depend on whether or not I'm back to full strength.

Luckily, I don't have to make that decision now.

Not that I know much about Kendo, but I am fairly familiar with knees and I saw your video of your tournament, so I feel fairly safe in saying this: "Just say NO."

You may be released, you may feel fine, but at only 20 or so weeks out of surgery, one wrong move can not only set you back, but put you behind (and in a worst case scenario, facing another surgery).

If the testing is at ALL strenuous (and I used to watch David in TaeKwonDo, so I know it probably is), I would wait til next year. SERIOUSLY.

Actually, not all that strenuous. There are techniques known as "old men's kendo" for us over the hill guys that rely a lot more on positioning and getting your opponent to do stuff than rushing at him and whacking him about the head and shoulders.

The sparring only lasts two minutes. Then it's line up and do kata which resembles Tai Chi a lot (lots of precise, scripted moves that are done at a deliberate pace). You have to do them quick enough so the judges don't think you don't know what the next move is, but they can't be rushed either or you get penalized for being too anxious. It's a fine balance.

But, October 9th is a ways away and both my sensei and my doctor will have to clear me before I can test.

ouch. well, at least you have a contractor, right? Although I have to laugh at the 'need AC' comment. I've been living without it at home for my entire life. I do have to mention that it's now I'm laughing. We hit a stretch of muggy 90+ weather, and I'll probably be agreeing. :D

If you need any distractions I'm only a county or so over. I'm a bit distracted lately, with the new job and every car we own needing repair, but I've been considering inviting you guys out to a movie or something to celebrate a full month of real honest to god paychecks....

Congrats on the finding work again. Yeah, we had talked about doing an anime night and then "boom", doctors, contractors, etc. . . .

Let us know when your schedule gets a little less crazy and we'll hook up this summer.
