Crybaby whining? You decide...

May 10, 2007 12:17

I dunno...I've been thinking about the issue a lot this last week or so and...I just feel like I don't really belong in Transformers fandom anymore. I seem to see things totally differently than everyone else seems to see them these days, which is likely my own fault because I've made it all too much my own, in a sense. The end result is that there ( Read more... )

transformers, general whining

Goodbye, O Queen, PJ originator. May all things black'n'white be with you...

A sad Whirlwind

Oh, I'm not really going anywhere, Whirl. I'm just...stepping back. I'm going to devote more of my time to other stuff and, for the time being, I'm not going to write much fanfic.(Which isn't much of a change since I've not been writing much for the past few years, anyway. :) ) I'll still be here. I'll still be on the Cell; I'm just not going to really participate in the board of the fandom in general for at least a little while.

Well, for starters, I think people's moods and tastes change with time. Your interest in Transformers may be waning to be replaced by something else, you never know. At the same time, I can sympathize. I barely care about the fandom anymore, if I was ever really a part of it. I love the Cell but have often wondered if I'm there for the few people I still know, or out of some bizarre loyalty.

Or maybe you're just maturing or something.

Tastes do change, yes. As I said somewhere else, Transformers has always been a fandom that, for me, comes and goes, that waxes and wanes in intensity. I think I'm just going into a waning phase now. I'm sure that I will come back to it; I always have. For now, I just want to put it on a back burner. Do something else. Think about something else. Retire from the drama for a while. Not have to defend myself for a while, even. :) I just don't want to have to worry about it for a while, I guess is what it all boils down to.

What is this Redemption thing you're talking about?

"Redemption" is a big fanfic that frostmook and I wrote about Starscream. I don't think you'd be interested. :) Some of the reactions to its publication did make me change some perspectives, and realize some truths and such. Hence, my leave of absence.

Taking a break could definitely be a good thing if you're burned out.

If you don't come back to the fandom, I know many people will miss you...even me, though we've barely "met." I know I like your fics - all I've read so far. And if this is something you enjoy, don't let people who don't see eye-to-eye with you turn you off from it. To each their own.

I hope you come to a decision that's best for you, and if that is indeed leaving the fandom, well, it's your decision. :-)

And age is just a number...fans can be fans no matter the chronological elapsed time. :-)

Oh, I'm sure I'll come back, as I said. Really, I'm not leaving. I'm just going to be less visible. I'm going into way-low-profile mode when it comes to TFs. I'm just not going to bother other people with my opinions and interpretations for a while, is all.

Well, I hope you'll still post them on your website. I rather enjoy reading your writing. :-) You've got a wicked sense of humor.

So what's the point of being part of a fandom in which I seem to disagree with practically everyone about practically everything?

Well, depends on what it is you want from fandom. Are you in fandom because you love the source material, and love to develop ideas about it, and to write/create stuff based on your ideas? Or are you in fandom mainly for socialising, and to share your ideas with like-minded people? (I'm assuming it's a little from column A, a little from column B.")

I can see how if the social aspect is what you want, it can get frustrating if the other fans, well, aren't like-minded.

So... I don't really have advice, other than, "take a break from fandom if and as long as you need to." But I think you've already arrived at that conclusion, haven't you?

I guess that, when all is said and done, I want not to waste my time. I don't have much of it that is my own, so what I do have I want to use wisely. It has become quite apparent to me that writing fanfics and offering them up for public consumption is largely a waste of that time because people don't agree with what I write and would rather read what others write. Which is fine. I'm certainly not going to say that they must love what I write. :)

So, I'm taking a break from all fanfic writing for a while, in order to use the time that I would have spent on it on other things that I like to do but that I have been neglecting. Like music. Like learning Flash. Like planting flowers. Like just reading books. Like anything else, really. Eventually, as I said, I'll go back to writing because I can't not write, but at this point I'm imagining that when I do go back it'll be in a very low-profile sort of way. The people who want to read my stuff will be able to find it, but I'm not going to shove it in their faces anymore. If people want me ( ... )
