Well, it was an eventful day.

I got a new job today. My current one is only guaranteed to last through June, at which point the owner might be hanging up his hat. So, I worked out a plan with the owner's wife: I'd find a new job that paid as well or better than what I'm making now, and still continue to do my current job on a part-time, mostly-from-home basis. My workload has ( Read more... )

I wonder if there's a market for teflon spray for roofs? (Or anything that ice won't stick to.)

Well here, Propanel roofs are pretty popular. It's made up of sheets of wavy metal, and the snow slides right off of it. Of course, then the resulting bank of snow is usually plopped right in front of your door, so heaven help you if you want to leave your house. :) Plus, it doesn't last as long as a shingle roof and you have to replace it often. Which isn't a big deal if you know how to and physically can do it yourself because the actual material is pretty cheap. But if you have to hire someone to put it on, then it's a fairly large expense. I don't think Teflon would work on shingles, as shingle roofs have all sorts of nooks and crannies. Plus, who knows how Teflon might interact with the asphalt that the shingles are made out of? Some kind of coating would be nice, but metal seems to work best.

Wimps indeed. :) Show them my pics and say, "Hey, it could be worse!" :) Then again, it's not completely unexpected that we get a lot of snow out here, and the vast majority of people drive cars that are 4WD so that helps with the freaking out, but still. Freaking out over an inch? I could see that in the Deep South, but it's not like Ohio doesn't generally get snow...

It is, yes. Far too much, really. I'm betting that it won't entirely melt until at least July. Especially around our house, since our house is surrounded by big Ponderosa pines.

Your area looks a lot like my area...at least before the torrential rain we had yesterday. I spent half an hour yesterday chipping ice off my driveway in the thaw, and for what? Well, at least I got the gutters cleared of snow before the rain came.

My husband is six feet tall, and he cannot be seen behind the banks at the end of the driveway. Thank you, plough.

Heh. Now that the Great Roof Snow Removal Project is complete, you almost can't see the house behind the snow banks. You couldn't see people even before the snow on the roof came down.

And yes, plows suck. After our big snowfall, they came through with a grader to try to get the snowpack of the (dirt) roads, and then removed the snow with a bulldozer. Guess where they bulldozed it to? Right into our yard and the yards of other people on our side of the street. There isn't a bank of snow along the road. There is a wall of snow that has to be 10 feet high. Our very own snow privacy fence. :) This contributes to the fact that, now, we have nowhere to shovel snow to when it falls. What really ticked me off is that there is a large empty lot right across the road from us. Why the heck couldn't they bulldoze the stuff there? Men! They don't think ( ... )

The trouble with you is that you don't stay extinct for very long. ;)

Not a thing. Except that when you say you're going to go extinct, it doesn't tend to last very long, what with the respawning capability.

And where have you been lately? So quiet. It's not like you...
