"No, it's not a bother, I assure you. I was just ... thinking. It wasn't inappropriate at all."
Alenia went quiet again for a moment before she heard the sudden noise nearby and her hand quickly went to the hilt of her sword. Her eyes narrowed and she scanned the area, not noticing anything more than a few shadows here and there. "What was that?"
Chrodechild looked around, Flash drawn and ready in one hand, her other holding Charles' reins firmly, murmuring to him comfortingly.
She couldn't see the possible threat either--but then it was clear why it was so hard to detect. The trees themselves were coming alive--several Ghost Hollies charging out of the shadows toward the two travelers.
Reflexively, Chrodechild activated the Mark of Defense Canopy, and the two women and the horse glowed with a protective magic armor ((provides physical defense not magic)), but a flurry of spiked leaves shot off by one of the were flying Chrodechild's way before she could do anything else.
As the monsters emerged from the shadows, the Queen's Knight tightened her grip on the hilt and drew her blade in one swift motion, ready to attack them the moment they threatened her and Chrodechild.
Alenia didn't have to wait long when she noticed the leaves fly out towards the other swordswoman. "Look out!" She yelled as she leapt in front of Chrodechild, parrying the leaves as they struck. When her path was cleared, she struck back at one of the Ghost Hollies.
"Damn monsters. Should have expected some, but still ..."
Chrodechild nodded a quick thanks as Alenia cut down the leaf maelstrom headed her way, and pivoted to guard Alenia's back.
She raised her sword hand and called next on the Mark of Bind Lightning, electricity arcing from her fingers to her sword to strike one of the charging hollies. It shuddered, and the scent of smouldering wood filled the air as it collapsed to the ground.
Two or three more creatures still bore down upon them.
Fortunately, it wasn't a problem to defeat the weaker Needle Beetles and Horo Horos, and Alenia quickly did so before sheathing her blade again once she determined that it was quiet again.
Turning her attention to Chrodechild, she asked the other woman, "That was impressive. What kind of rune do you have?"
Chrodechild re-sheathed her sword, and murmured to the horse to steady it. Fortunately, Kathy or whoever had trained the horse had taught it to deal to some extent with such situations.
"We don't have runes in my world. They're Marks." She flexed her hands. Briefly the symbols for the two spells she had cast, plus Mind's Eye and True Falcon shone before her, above her hands. "The magic seems similar to Rune magic, but... one comes by it a different way."
I'm so sorry I can't keep up more frequently >_<godwin_knightFebruary 17 2010, 00:31:15 UTC
"... Marks?" Alenia was baffled. It was bizarre to think of a place where runes didn't exist. She blinked in curiousity at the sight of what the other swordswoman called "Marks" and thought to herself that they didn't seem that very different from runes at all.
It's okay, I've been a little AWOL myselfnightsveilqueenFebruary 18 2010, 16:14:08 UTC
Chrodechild paused--explainable enough by trying to compose an answer to a complicated question. But she stopped to wonder how much she should tell Alenia--and then immediately hated herself for mistrusting her friend. She knew that if she explained Chronicles, Alenia might tell Godwin, and from what she heard about Godwin, he might take an unhealthy interest in them
( ... )
Remaining quiet as Chrodechild explained, Alenia frowned, her thoughts going to the Twilight Rune and how she was incapable of controlling its power. It was a fact that still irritated her to the day, especially since it turned out that Sialeeds was far more able with it than she ever was. Yet another reason for Gizel to favor her ...
Eventually, she shook her head and spoke up. "That is very different than anything I've heard of regarding our runes. We have various kinds, some more significant than others, but none more so than the True Runes, which govern our world. Those who bear them, have incredible power but ..." Now her thoughts turned to Queen Arshtat's time with the Sun Rune and her face fell a little. "As often is the case, it comes with a great price."
Turning her attention back to the other swordswoman, she sighed. "I can't imagine what it's like to have one's world destroyed, let alone such a thing possible. But regardless, I am far from my home country, which was the extent of my own personal world."
"So I've heard, about the True Runes." She was thinking more of what Tir had told her about his Rune. "I've wondered... this world MUST have a Chronicle, but if it is fact in the form of one of these Runes. I know little of rune lore to know if it's possible, though."
There seemed to be no further sign of danger, and Chrodechild pressed on. They would not be far from the cavern now.
"You are also out of your own time, if I recall. It must be very difficult--I don't know what would be worse, to never see Astrasia again, or to visit an Astrasia that isn't... that isn't mine..."
