Because I have a BA in English Literature, and if things had worked out differently I might have had a career in the writing field myself. It bothers me that plagiarism is rampant, even on a so called "professional" level. It bothers me that so few collegiate English programs teach their students how to survive in the real world, versus how to survive in the ivory towers of academia.
PhD Rhetoric here, Department of English version (though I wish it had been in Communications instead).
This is so not news to me. Of *course* there's no practical education in such departments--most of the Profs have dreams of being the next T. S. Eliot, though they won't admit it.
And those who don't want to be T. S. Eliot (who was at least competent and prolific), want to be the next Dean of the College.
I can't even start, given how disgusted I am with my experiences in most Departments of English. Words aren't failing me, but you don't need a non-fiction book-length evaluation of the industry as a comment on your post.
BTW, hope you've good T-Day plans developing. :-) Looks like I'm grilling this weekend so my husband can make experimental Pumpkin Turkey Curry. Yes, I'm very worried... ;-)
Pumpkin-Turkey Curry sounds yummy. If it works out, you'll have to give me the recipe.
We're probably going to do something not very "traditional". Nobody in my husband's family really likes turkey enough for me to cook a whole bird, and even a large turkey breast tends to go to waste--my MIL feeds the leftovers to her (very spoiled) German shepherd. MIL has dental issues and can't chew very well, so I'm going to do either chicken and potatoes in the crockpot, or a big pot of baked potato soup on the stovetop.
I never pursued a graduate English degree because of the guaranteed interference by the Maternal Unit. But you don't have to have a doctorate to understand how hucksters like Frey, plagiarists like Griggs, and their ilk are damaging the "professional" (in their case, I use that term very loosely) writing field.

What did the link have to do with plagiarism, though? Signing a bad contract has nothing at all to do with being plagiarized, does it?
