Personally I think the reason Death Note comes off as sexist is because its only important female character is a twit being used by her male counterpart (and not caring that she is being used). I find Death Note's characters pretty annoying in general, though, whether they're male or female.

Sai would have made a beautiful woman. XD Haha.

Misa isn't the worst offender, and I'm more annoyed with her as a character than as a woman (why does she never, ever, EVER question Light and his behaviour? Jesus). But you can't deny that this has a point, and the series is rather unsubtle about the message that women aren't capable of independent thinking (a point in which Misa actually IS competent, making it all the more mind-boggling that she ends up on her back for Light).

I just think that most DN characters display a baffling lack of personality.

I would not think I'm very wrong if I guessed that Sai might hold a record in being mistaken for the wrong gender *g*

What I got from Misa's character is the author's statement that no matter how much power a woman has, she can never be the equal of her male counterpart. And I totally agree with that whole comic you linked.

Death Note characters seem to have something compelling about them at first glance, but the author never really delves much beneath the surface. I also found the series' tendancy to randomly discard characters after they'd been brought into the story with seeming importance irritating. DN went off on so many pointless tangents. It could have been half its size and complexity and still accomplished what it was trying to do.

On the other hand, HnG has wonderful characters. ^^ And I'll bet you're right about Sai. He doesn't have breasts, though - maybe that's the part Obata has problems with.

Good point about Misa there - particularly in comparison to that lawyer in the second part. He has to be a less-than-lucid extremist to take the part that she assumed just by being a woman *facepalm*

I think I would have had a lot less problems with DN if it hadn't been more or less the first series I started reading after I finished Hikago *g* The gap just got too big - to go from an entire cast of well-developed and always-growing characters to, well, Light & company was a gigantic letdown.

I made this post in bafflement over how somebody could claim that Obata has problems drawing women. Hikago is hardly much better than DN when it gets to the gender distribution, but the girls aren't drawn with any less individual designs than the boys. I dare even say that Obata might be one of the few who is capable of drawing unpretty women, so... well, I really think that some people might want to check out his previous merits.
