So I've been working on a Merlin Preseries Modern!AU epic and the most part of that is the casting for it because I wanted to imagine a young version of Uther and Ygraine just walking around the hallways of a university, not that there's really anything wrong with Tony Head (because, let's face it, he's flawless) or anything. This is probably going to be my new baby cos it's taking up a lot of my time during the holidays so there might be a lot of it posting around. But, regardless, here's the casting with some character profiles, other less important characters and OCs will be added later, either in this post or another post entirely.
ENJOY THE PRETTINESS
Nicholas Hoult // Uther PendragonCharacter Profile. Uther Pendragon, born and raised in at atmosphere that should only make him the young man other young men want to be, is a pre-law student at Caerleon Academy. He's a bit stubborn, a bit of an arrogant prat, sure, but he hasn't heard anything that says that that's necessarily a bad thing -except from his best mate, Gaius, but Gaius is always telling him he's a prick, even when he's being nice. But, truth is, though, he's a big sentimental dork, his heart's in the right place. At least he likes to think it is.
Dianna Agron // Ygraine 'Ray' de Bois
Character Profile. Ray is very much the observer than the observed, at least she wants to be that way, but then she can't help but fall into Uther Pendragon's crowd at the uni and spend them with them when she's not taking care of her trouble-making younger brother, Tristan, or making sure Agravaine's got his head screwed on right. The thing is, though, she probably does want to be observed, to be heard, because if there's one thing she can argue about, it's her own morals and ethics she keeps close to her chest.
Eddie Redmayne // Gaius Germaine
Character Profile. See, truth is, Gaius would pretty content with being a lonely introvert whose cause of death would be too much stress from being a pre-med student, but then again, Gaius would also be pretty happy if he was to spend his academic career standing side by side with Uther because, even though he's a sod, he's his best bloke. So, he does it, he stands by his best friend, he gets unnaturally intrigued by magic whenever Nim does it, and spends his free time with his girlfriend, Alice, and his good friend, Geoff. He gets intrigued by everything, though, even by Geoff sometimes, so maybe it's not that big of a deal.
Emilia Clarke // Nimueh Llyn
Character Profile. Some people might think she's some kind of magical goth kid just because she's one of the few people taking up Magical Studies as a minor but she really isn't because, contrary to popular belief, she does believe in destiny and crap like that. She truly believes that magic is her destiny. She doesn't let it take up her life, though -she always thought it was weird how a life was never lived again just because of fate- so she keeps hanging around Uther and Gaius, she keeps going on with her Philosophy major. She just knows what waiting for her when she graduates: a right kind of magic.
Astrid Berges-Frisbey // Hunith
Character Profile. To her cousin, Gaius, Hunith seems to be nothing more than a young naive woman, but, really, she doesn't want to be. She wants to explore and see things and make sure they're hers to see. She might even stay at Caerleon and study magic, along with journalism. She wants all the adventures the world can provide her, if fate would allow it for her. That in itself might make her naive and hopeful in a hopeless context but she really doesn't mind. Also, she'd really like to say hello to the good-looking guy across Gaius's dorm without him looking like he's got the stomach flu but she'll work on that.
Ben Barnes // Balinor
Character Profile. He's always been a problem but it's not like he wants to be. It should only be fitting that the problem started having problems of his own because his father wants him to be ready for the responsibility of becoming a Dragonlord. It's his destiny, apparently, and Balinor has an obligation to his dying father so he has to follow through. He knows he doesn't have to like it, the trait being passed on like this, but he actually does. He likes having some kind of purpose even if he doesn't know what to do with it. That's not new, though, being confused, he's confused a lot, especially since she came around.
Andrew Garfield // Geoff Magister
Character Profile. He's been waiting for uni, actually, the freedom it's said to give and the more in-depth education he's going to get with his Lit major but he's sorely disappointed because it's just the same old scenario with a bigger setting. That's fine by him, though, he's always been the one who looks at his glass half-full instead of otherwise, and besides, he's got his friends (that are mostly Gaius's friends but it's not like he minds) and he's got his meeting and they're going good. He supposes the one thing he'd like to change about his current experience is his current infatuation, for lack of a better word and for a lack of a term that might actually suit his feelings.
Sam Claflin // Gorlois
Billie Piper // Vivian
Arthur Darvill // Rupert
Imogen Poots // Alice
Jim Sturgess // Agravaine
Tom Felton // Aredian
