I think I must be really lucky in my placement because nobody ever gives me crap about taking sick days or vacation days.... in fact my schools often encourage me to take sick days if I am feeling ill. And nobody has ever made me feel bad about taking trips, in fact they often said they felt bad I was giving them omiyage at first, because I don't think the previous teachers gave them so much... but you know they like it :P Then again I hardly ever take vacation days when I am scheduled for class, so I am usually just skipping a BOE day when I would be bored anyway ( ... )

my schools have never made me feel bad about using nenkyuu or leaving school early because i didn't feel well and they've always appreciated my omiyage (yeah, they do like it lol), it's just the BOE.... actually, the BOE was nice about nenkyuu and byoukyuu until my supervisor changed... my previous supervisor was awesome and seemed to stand up for us ALTs to her bosses, but once she left and a new (seemingly spineless) supervisor replaced her, things have just gone downhill a lot....

i seriously think that a lot of Japan should be taking the parenting classes that your church offers...

I actually JUST got a new boss at the BOE and I have no idea how he treats everything yet... he does seem nice at first impression. And since I am only here another 3 or so months I am not worried too much. My old boss was always fine with everything I asked, from asking if I could go to the bank or something to asking if I could take of days I was scheduled to teach because of some special thing going on and I really need that day... which I only did twice but he let me do it both times.

we are no longer able to fill in our own taxi tickets - the lady next to !@#$, and who doesn't speak english, is responsible for filling in our names and dates now - so if you don't use them - you have to give it back to them so they can trash it.

everything is getting more and more inefficient - it's really frustrating - and that es curriculum-lesson plan-booklet crapola - honestly - how the hell can you make a lesson out of "showing feelings and gestures of feelings" for 45 fucking minutes.

i don't even want to get into nenkyu - and the awesomeness of going to the hospital to get sick leave for a hangover . . . oh, and by the way, if you show up at the hospital smelling like cigarettes and alcohol complaining of nausea and a headache, you will be told that you have a "nervous" stomach.

*breathe*

thanks for writing your rant - i feel better for reading and responding to it ;)

thanks for the heads up, i didn't know about the taxi ticket or hospital thing.

i wouldn't be surprised if they find out about some little bus that goes to Haruno and stop doing the taxi ticket thing all together, though.

In some ways it seems to be worse than in our school in others better.
I knew about most things you wrote already. No wonder you always hear about teachers commiting suicide. I wouldn't want to be a Japanese teacher in a public school (nor a salaryman XD).

At least you get paid vacation and paid sick leave.
Actually in my school I never really experienced that Japanese come to work even if they're half-dead. Most of my Japanese coworkers stayed home when they were sick. One of the daughters of my boss stay home quite often when she has a headache. Me on the other hand (and my American coworker) have both never missed a day of work, even if we were REALLY sick.
Sucks, I know.

Thanks for that.
Interesting read :)
