Arthur slipping in to expected behavior, trying to keep his attraction to Merlin at bay makes sense for a boy his age in a town this small. Zach's drunken taunting and attack of Will showed why he feels unable to step forward. Zach's behavior is atrocious, but Arthur not sticking up for his friend is terrible, too. Then Zach carries the stupidity with him to school and Arthur doesn't stand up again. It's awful.
The entire scene at Merlin's house was lovely. It was quiet and sensual and you captured Arthur's panic beautifully. The quiet house and the quiet petting and Arthur just looking his fill had my heart in my throat.
Of course, though Merlin's back on the team, nothing's really changed other than torturous proximity. It's making my heart ache for both boys.
I enjoy reading your insight. Unfortunately, I think it's this way for a lot of people in high school. It's so much easier to play the role that's been carved out for you. But Arthur has a big, ol' noble heart still, though it's not been fully realized.
