This is an inevitable result of Karl Rove's "Big Tent" approach. On the one hand, you have the classical Goldwater conservatives - reduce governmental interference, let free markets run as they will. On the other, you have the rabid social conservatives who want to legislate morality. Then you shove them together... Sadly, the result of this unholy matrimony is co-option of the party by its most rabid elements, and a slow but steady dragging of the national debate as a whole to the right.

It's interesting that people who religiously pledge "liberty and justice for all" and support free markets (i.e. neo-liberal economics) consider "liberal" a derogatory term.
