Theatre review: Life is a Dream

Pedro Calderón de la Barca was roughly a contemporary of Shakespeare's, and in this production of Life is a Dream the Spanish playwright shows many similarities with his English counterpart (an effect helped by Helen Edmundson's blank verse translation.) It is however as well-regarded in Spain (and Spanish-speaking countries) as Hamlet is here, one of their all-time classics.

I'm not surprised. I'd still have thought it would have a reputation over here in translation though, it's a very strong piece. (That said, the two guys sitting to my right didn't sound that impressed but I guess you can't please everyone.)
