With the first two pieces of art chosen by the Mayor's Committe for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square consisting of a good statue that I didn't feel suited the location, and the current load of old meh, it's good to see that the shortlist for 2009's occupant is a lot better IMO. But what's this? Antony Gormley's proposal is for members of the public to stand on there for an hour at a time, for a year. I thought of that too! Antony Gormley has been stealing from my brain! I demand the Turner Prize. As well as the model, Gormley has also written a 33-page document outlining how to make the whole thing feasible and not result in deaths etc. Granted, I didn't get round to doing that bit.

Here's the shortlist - click on a name to see their proposal. It's not a public vote, the committee who plonked a lump of coloured plastic there for 2008 will still decide, but this time there is at least public input. I like Tracey Emin's meercats. Because, frankly, who doesn't like meercats? But with the exception of Jeremy Deller's burnt-out car from Iraq (it's all a bit student politics for me) I'd be pretty happy with any of them. What do people MEERCATS think? I wouldn't want to influence your MEERCATS decision. Anish Kapoor's mirror will probably be spectacular and look completely different from one day to the next; I like the humour of Yinka Shonibare's ship in a bottle; and Bob & Roberta Smith's just looks so HUGE I'd probably want to go look at it again and again. And they all feel, to me at least, to have a real connection to the location in one way or another MEERCATS.

Actually I kinda wouldn't mind Gormley's (and mine) to be the one picked. You can bet I'd be signing up for a stint as soon as it was announced.

PS: MEERCATS
