Except that without Trek (and by extension it's spinoff's TNG and DS9) then you probably wouldn't have had most of the genre sahows you watch!

Before TNG there was very little long-running SF/fantasy stuff on TV (Quantum Leap was the only main success of the 80's imho.) Next Gen made tv studios realise there was still potential in the genre. DS9, B5, Xfiles, Buffy et all followed in the wake of it.
