I will have the saké tasting on Saturday February 21. It seems to work best with most people - and I will happily accept dagibbs' offer of venuing. It can easily be combined into a gaming day. :) If so, I expect post-dinner is best, likely 7:30pm.

I'm in for both of those tastings, and will give TheWhimsicalOne notice for the Feb 27th beer tasting.

If you are prepared to spring $350 for a Nexus 5 bought directly from Google (don't buy it from Fido/Rogers/Koodo/etc since they will charge 500 or 550!) the phone is unlocked by design and usable with any provider.
Which also means you can give it a cheap US # when you are in the States if you end up picking a plan where the trade-off is prohibitive US roaming costs.
(Wind's unlimited data includes the US, but I've heard others complain that their coverage is crappy).
It also means you can buy the phone and then subscribe to a plan as a bring your own device customer - they shold give you a discount for that, and there shouldn't be a contract lock-in.

I believe all Nexus models have this design feature, so you could look for a used Nexus 5, or I believe even Nexus 4's.

Although you could do the same thing with that phone you mentioned on Amazon too, for that matter, subject to Dagibbs' caveat about software updates.

BTW #1: If you ask the telco sellers (e.g. the vendors in the Rideau Centre booths, or even over the phones) about unlocked phones, they will claim that the Nexus isn't unlocked. This is a crock. What they mean is that they don't unlock it. They don't need to because the manufacturer already sells it that way ( ... )

Please check the update on the beer date having to change. My deepest regrets.

I highly doubt my union has any such thing... just checked: nope.

Bringing my device to Bell I think limits me to prepaid plans, which has no US data plan - probably because they expect everyone using it has unlocked phones. Or something.

Hi, Niall! I don't think I'll be able to make the sake tasting. But if you're re-scheduling the beer tasting, please let me know! Sorry for the late reply, BTW ... I've been very busy with work and other stuff the last couple of weeks.
