I carve the wandering stories into my staff.

A crossed scallop shell, for the ten thousand pulled through Spain every year.

A bodhi tree, for where a prince sat down and an Enlightened One stood up.

An armoured lamb, for Stephen of Cloyes leading thirty thousand children to disaster.

A python wrapped around the navel of the world, for the oracles who gave their gnomic answers at the behest of the bright god.

A monkey glyph with a spiralled tail, for the lines carved into the desert's sacred paths.

Stories must be told, even if we have nobody to tell.
