To me a disciple is like a student/apprentice. Apprentices learned by doing, not just by being a student the way we do school these days. There absolutely has to be an active component. Jesus sent his disicples out to heal and cast out demons and preach. I think the philosophy of the apprentice/disicple relationship is "learning by doing". I like to think that the lazy servant who buried his talentgot in trouble because he didn't try and that ultimately the master (God) would have been happier even if he'd done something and lost the money than done nothing.
