Such good news. When we lived in the west end of Toronto, we had a Y membership. I used to take the girl to the drop-in daycare, and go to aquafit classes. I think you'll like them. They were way more low key than an (land) aerobics class, and didn't require as much coordination. And it's a really good way to start getting into shape.
*hugs* Oh I'm so glad to hear this. I'm sorry my connection flaked out again. By the time I got everything working again, you had already left. Since it really was quite a while later, I wasn't surprised.
You'll do fine at the Y. A significant portion of the population there is doing rehab work or getting back into gear after a long absence. Sure, you and I will never be the model perfect women that seem to inhabit a lot of high price gyms, but we can enjoy some work and be happy. No one really cares there if you look overweight and unless you gained 50 pounds since I last saw you, you don't have anything at all to worry about.
I'm glad you are giving it a try and I think you will surprise yourself with how well you do.
I know EXACTLY how you feel. But over the past 10 years, exercise has actually become one of the most fulfilling parts of my life. I only regret that I don't have the time and organization to do as much of it as I should, these days.
We used to belong to the Y in Boston, and we loved it. It wasn't the cleanest or most shiny gym ever, but it had great facilities for a good price and the people were unfailingly friendly. Also, they have a national travel plan where you can get in either free or sharply discounted at other Ys, which I found very useful.
